Jalan Bahasa 26
A Corner House
As part of a group of luxury bungalows and by virtue of the land size among all the plots, it was going to be the showpiece. It is the very first house that greets passers-by travelling along Jalan Bahasa, and perhaps this plot was always supposed to be the extroverted eldest sibling.
In terms of the spatial planning, priority had been giving to the ‘social’ spaces – the living and dining room. We located them at the front of the site, with uninterrupted access and views to the large expanse of garden, swimming pool and surroundings. Full height glass doors span the entirety of the spaces creating an opportunity for a seamless experience between the inside and the outside. We choose not to segment the dining and living into individual rooms but rather to be read and enjoyed as one, for larger gatherings and parties. A full length continuous feature wall further visually connects the spaces.
Emphasis on the common spaces as the highlight of the house is also apparent in the double volume design of the living room. The master study room overlooks the grand living which has a provision for a huge feature chandelier.
We believe we tackled the challenging nature of the site – a huge difference in height between the land and the road – by creating a series of tiered planters that slope upwards. Here the landscape plays an integral role, with raw boulders and lush greenery breaking up and visually softening the concrete retaining walls.
